History / Background Information: Walmart Stores Inc. is the world’s largest retailer with over $350 billion in revenues. Before you actually participate in the Walmart survey, it is important that you learn and understand more about the company.
Walmart was started in the year 1962 by Sam Walton and was incorporated in October 1969. The company began publicly trading on the NYSE in the year 1972.
With its head quarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, Walmart is largest employer in the private sector in the United States. The company also owns and runs a chain of retail warehouses known as Sam’s Club in North America.
Soon after the company was incorporated, Walmart opened its first distribution center at Bentonville. At this stage the company had 38 stores with just a little over 1500 employees on its rolls with a turnover of $44 million. Very soon the company expanded to five states and around 1975 the company had about 125 stores with 7500 employees and revenue of approximately $340 million.
Today, Walmart has over 8500 retail outlets spread across 15 countries and operates with tie ups in 55 different locations. In the US, the company operates in all the 50 states under its own brand name. However, in places like Japan, it operates under the name of Seiyu while in Mexico, it is known as Walmex. In India, it has tied up with Bharti and operates under the Best Price name. In most of the other locations the company has fully owned operations.
Such is the popularity of Walmart amongst ordinary customers that about one third of the American population shops at Walmart stores every week. One of the reasons why people prefer shopping at Walmart is because of the low prices you get there. The company aggressively promoted the concept of low prices always for more than four decades. According to a few analysts the average income of a Walmart customer is less than the national average and most of them are vulnerable to high gas prices and utility costs.
The Walmart Stores comprises of three retail divisions that account for close to 64% of the company’s total sales. During the last financial year the revenues of Walmart Stores stood at $258 billion. The three divisions that contribute to the overall turnover of the company include Supercenters, Discount Stores and Neighborhood Markets.

I made the mistake of going to Easton Pa. Palmer Twsp. Walmart store #02252 today. This is the absolute worst retail store in the history of American retailing. Half the shelves are empty, and checkout lines were backed up halfway into the ladies department and this was not due to social distancing. There were only four cashier serviced check-out lines open with lines of ten customers each minimum waiting. I should have known better than to even pull into the parking lot because this type of experience is not uncommon at this location. I have shopped in numerous Walmarts throughout the country in AZ,TX,LA,FL,CO,MD,DE,NJ,NY,and PA, but this store is, by far, the absolute worst. Next time I want something from Walmart I will drive the 7 miles to New Jersey to shop at the Phillipsburg store. The manager of this store could not manage a hot dog cart.
Today I picked up a call in order for groceries in Greenville, Al- The experience was perfect; I was attended by a Walmart employee named Sierra. I never been treated better; I would hi9ghly recommend to anyone to shop on line & pickup @ the store especially if you can be attended by an employee like Sierra, she was fantastic.-Ted Monk, Pine Apple, Al
